Trabajo
El Centro has been working on the following goals:
1 To support workers in recuperating wages owed to them by improving our process. This includes making improvements in the intake form, clarifying alternatives to the legal route and identifying other options that are also possible. The main goal is to identify a labor violation and help the worker who is receiving a consult to explore next steps with the help of a consejera/asesora (a worker member who has been trained in identifying labor violations, especially wage debts total amounts).
2 Train 200 hundred workers to Know Your labor Rights and training 15 worker leaders to become worker counselors for other workers.
3 Better document labor violation cases and gather data to know how much is owed annually and share some of the data we have on the current conditions in this industry in Orange County, support organizing efforts to bring light to current issues through media and community events. This can also include sharing examples of effective organizing strategies, solidarity and a culture of implementing workers rights
Justicia Economica y Nuestras Manos:
El Centro is building and strengthening our base of domestic workers, mostly female identified, through the Nuestras Manos. The organization has a solid base of 30 women who are supporting workers as they return to work or demand better working conditions. Our local calls have reached up to 200 domestic workers.
This group of women is also currently working with Radio Santa Ana to document their stories, as a primary group of informal labor impacted by the pandemic. Workers are facilitating their own trainings now, not only participating.
In addition to our local organizing, this group is also engaged in advocating for local and state policy changes, such as SB1257, which would B 1257 would eliminate the exclusion of “household domestic service” from California's occupational health and safety protections. Relief efforts have also provided hundreds of families who are depending on domestic work as a primary income who we are now following up with.
Nuestras Metas/ Our Goals
